Energy trading and ETRM training

The rarest person on a trading desk is the developer who understands the trade.

Desks pay around £850 a day for them, and it's the one trading-tech rate that rose this year. I teach the trade and the systems in weeks, and I review your code myself.

Day rates: IT Jobs Watch, UK contracts, six months to 21 October 2026.

The gap

Desks can't find developers who understand trading.

Generic developers fail the P&L question in interviews.

Traders can't explain to IT what they need.

By role: quant developer, ETRM business analyst, power market analyst, head of trading technology.

What ETRM training covers here

An ETRM system books a trade, values it, measures its risk and settles it. The courses teach what happens at each step, and why. On Premium you build it.

ETRM work Where it is taught
Deal capture The trade lifecycle: capture, validation and confirmation (Practitioner Track). A toy exchange that emits the trades (Systems Builder Track).
Position Position aggregation and delta exposure (Energy Trading Fundamentals). A position engine you build and test (Systems Builder Track).
P&L Forward curves and mark-to-market P&L (Energy Trading Fundamentals). The nightly curve run (Practitioner Track). A nightly settlement and P&L job (Python for Commodities).
Risk Limits, VaR and credit exposure (Energy Trading Fundamentals). Swaps, options and the Greeks (Practitioner Track).
Settlement Physical and financial settlement, invoicing and reconciliation (Practitioner Track).
Reporting REMIT and EMIR (Practitioner Track).

This is not vendor training for Endur or Allegro. It teaches the trading work those systems are built to do.

What is inside

The courses build from physical reality up to the systems, with worked examples and exercises throughout.

Standard

Energy Trading Fundamentals

How energy markets work, from the power station up.

  • How power is generated and priced: the merit order and the marginal plant.
  • Gas: LNG, storage, NBP and TTF. The spark spread.
  • Positions, delta exposure, forward curves and mark-to-market P&L.
  • Order books, interconnectors, carbon, limits and VaR.

You come away able to follow a desk's talk of positions, curves and P&L, and to say where each number comes from.

Standard

The Practitioner Track

The instruments and processes, as a desk runs them.

  • Day-ahead and intraday power, imbalance, and trading gas in Great Britain.
  • Swaps and options: Black 76 and the Greeks.
  • EFET and ISDA agreements, PPAs, cross-border capacity and FTRs.
  • REMIT, EMIR and MiFID II. Power trading strategies.
  • A trade from capture to settlement. The nightly curve run.

You come away able to read a PPA term sheet and follow a trade to settlement.

Standard

Python for Commodities

Python written the way a trading system needs it.

  • Structure, data modelling and tests, with every example from trading.
  • The clock-change days, money in Decimal, and strict validation at the boundary.
  • Tests that protect money, reruns that agree, and audit records.

You come away able to write a nightly settlement and P&L job you can rerun and explain.

Standard

BESS Economics

How grid-scale batteries make money.

  • The battery as a constrained asset.
  • Arbitrage, balancing and capacity, and how they stack.
  • Dispatch optimisation in Python.
  • Route to market, project economics, and proving the revenue.

You come away able to tell gross battery revenue from revenue a lender will finance.

Free

The career guides

One role per guide, mapped to the courses. Free to read here.

You come away knowing what the job is, what interviews ask, and what to study first.

Premium

The Systems Builder Track

Projects that build on each other. I review every pull request.

  • A price curve simulator: mean reversion, a command line, tests, merit-order dispatch.
  • A position and P&L engine: trade ingestion, aggregation, delta and mark-to-market.
  • A toy power exchange: an order book, continuous matching, a day-ahead auction and an API.

You come away with working code on GitHub that you can walk an interviewer through.

In their words

Someone who built it checks your work

"Jordan has helped to develop those new skills further through insightful pull request comments with each PR I submit."

Joseph C., Senior Data Engineer

"He explains concepts very clearly and guides us on the right direction."

Jaime C., Staff Engineer

"As someone working in the industry but who has never completed a course etc, this validated a lot of what I learned on the job."

Luca M., LCP Delta

The technical and the commercial, together

"I appreciated how the course bridges technical knowledge with commercial realities, understanding not just how power is generated, but how it's priced, traded and hedged."

Bruno C., engineering student

"Commodity trading software is one of those niches of the market where domain knowledge is actually king."

Victor S., Software Engineer

Complexity stripped away

"It strips away so much of the unnecessary complexity that traders often add to the market."

Albin R., Arcane Energy

"All the concepts and calculations build on each other."

David O., Balyasny

One person's result, not a promise: a February 2026 bootcamp student moved from energy analyst to the trading desk within three months.

Questions

Is this different from free videos?
Yes. Someone who built these systems checks your work.
Do I need to code?
Not for Standard. Premium projects are in Python.
Can my employer pay?
Yes, by invoice. Email us.
Can I cancel?
Yes. A monthly plan cancels any time.
Which markets?
The courses are built on GB and European power and gas. Material on Skool explains how US power and gas differ, and US students have taken them.

I built the trading platforms behind six desks at Shell, and at Centrica and Limejump.
